DIY - SAAB CD Changer Connector Harness

Rickard
As been discussed in several threads, if you have a Saab 9-5 wagon manufactured between 00-05 then a CD Changer Connector Harness is required to connect the BlueSaab module.

Unfortunately, the CD Changer Connector Harness (OE# 400129243) is no longer available.
(I checked with Orio and they confirmed the part is retired)

Luckily, all TE CONNECTIVITY connectors required to assembly your own harness is available to purchase.

Part number of the connectors:
* 1-962344-1 (2-pin connector for CAN. 1 piece required)
* 1-965426-1 (6-pin connector for audio, 12v and ground. 1 piece required)
* 827230-1 (12-pin connector to BlueSaab module. 1 piece required)

The parts are available from Digi-Key and Auto-click.co.uk.
(I ordered mine from auto-click.co.uk since they included terminals and seals)

Once you have all the parts, follow this instruction to crimp the terminals.

Then plug them into the connectors using the schematic Seth created:

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks, good info. There was some argument about whether pin 4 or 6 was unused, didn't get confirmed.

Just to note that if you want to use a different supplier for the connectors that doesn't include the terminals (seals not required), here are the needed part numbers:

The 2 and 6 pin connectors need Saab cable terminal P/N 41 15 275. You need 7. These can be substituted by TE Connectivity 2.8x0.8 tab, Junior Power Timer, Std, 0.5-1.0 mm² wire,
valid P/Ns are: x-962841-x (strip) or x-963745-x (loose piece).
Alternative P/Ns are x-964294-x (strip) or x-964293-x (loose piece).
The x's in the P/Ns above are for material/finish variants, and are not critical. Choose at least tin plated if possible, or pre-tinned.

The 12 pin connector needs Saab cable terminal 91 20 957 (NLS-USE 12789796). You need 8.
These can be substituted by TE Connectivity JPT receptacle, Std, 0.5-1.0 mm² wire,
valid P/Ns are: x-927775-x (strip) or x-927783-x (loose piece).
Alternative P/Ns are x-964284-x (strip) or x-964283-x (loose piece).

You also need a ring terminal for the ground wire. Saab P/N 78 29 617 or equivalent, to suit M6 stud.

Wire should be at least 0.5 mm² in area, except power wire (pin 6 on CD changer) should be at least 0.75 mm².
Make sure to use twisted wire for the CAN bus cable, or twist it before cutting to length/assembly. The left and right channel pairs are balanced and should also be twisted, preferably with different numbers of turns per unit length.

Also, there is some flexibility on connector P/Ns as well; should be able to use 2-962344-1 as well, for example. Finally, if you're never going to hook up a real CD changer and want to save the 12-pin connectors (827230-1 and 827229-1), you can just solder your made up harness direct to the BlueSaab - bearing in mind it'll be harder to remove later. Or just use another generic pair of 8-way connectors at the BlueSaab end.

Edit: added mention of twisted audio pairs and emphasised P/Ns.

OK, based on a close look at this picture of the actual genuine harness part, and this datasheet for the connector, since the black wire goes to pin 1, then pin 6 is definitely the unpopulated one, and the WIS is correct, which means Seth's first schematic was correct, as reproduced in Rickard's first post above.

Correct, pin 6 is unused.
It also shows the same on this image in the WIS

Also, thanks for the good info about wire sizes etc!

Clarification; it appears that pin 6 is unused in the later, short connection cable (MY 2000 chassis Y3065548- and later, P/N 400 129 243) for cars "PRE-CDC" where the connectors for the extra harness are at the rear wheel arch.

In earlier MY1999 - MY2000 up to chassis -Y3065547) there is less cabling already included and the connectors are back by the A-Pillar with different housings and/or pinouts, and a longer cable is in the kit (400 111 720). In the 6-way connector by the A-pillar, pin 4 is unused, instead of pin 6.

Also note the green and white CAN wires are on pins 1 and 2 of the 2-way connector respectively, which is a different style to the later cars, and the opposite pin numbers. These pinouts are shown correctly in the 1999 version of the WIS.

For the DIY version of the earlier "long" connection cable, see this thread.
